Sunroofs and Conservatories are nice features to have in a building, they bring in lots of natural sunlight and allows you to showcase a little nature within your space with colorful indoor plants. This however allows in a lot of glare, IR heat and harmful UV rays. We at Aloka specialize in covering such structures with sun control or energy saving solar shatterproof films with just the right hue and tint. We have been doing this for a considerable amount of time and can help you select the right type of film that will allow your plants to thrive while substantially cutting out much of the glare, infrared rays and harmful UV rays. Sunroof installations are generally quite challenging and we therefore encourage you to consult with us before the glass panes are put up, doing so will definitely save you a lot of money in terms of selecting the right glass size to film installation costs. We do both interior films as well as outside weatherable films, however, it is highly recommended that you opt for internal films installation as they last much longer owing to the extreme humid, rain and dust conditions in Sri Lanka.

A Glance at how the Solar Spectrum works
You would be surprised to know that the sun is white and it emits all the colors of visible light we are able to see and not see as well, in fact all the frequencies emitted by the sun are electromagnetic waves except gamma rays. This includes radio waves, microwaves, infrared waves, visible light, ultraviolet waves, and X-rays. The sun is a thermal body and emits light through the process of thermal radiation. We calculate light waves in nanometers which is a billionth of a meter (0.000000001 m). Solar radiation is radiant (electromagnetic) energy from the sun. It provides light and heat for the Earth and energy for photosynthesis. This radiant energy is necessary for the metabolism of the environment and its inhabitants. However, too much of it is extremely dangerous and its therefore always better to avoid too much exposure to the sun. When we move outside, we’ve learnt to use UV Blocking creams to protect ourselves from dangerous Ultraviolet rays which are known to cause skin cancer and other serious skin ailments. It is impossible to judge with 100% accuracy the strength of each days radiation and calculate how much radiation may hit us or how much we can tolerate. The sun gives out bursts of energy and ranges will fluctuate where we would find one range over lapping another at times. The three relevant bands or ranges, along the solar radiation spectrum are ultraviolet, visible (PAR), and infrared. Of the light that reaches Earth’s surface, infrared radiation makes up 48.7% of while visible light provides 44.7%. Ultraviolet radiation makes up between 6% ~ 7% of the total solar radiation. Each of these bands has a different impact on life and environment.
FACTS ABOUT GLASS BREAKAGE AND WHAT TYPE OF FILM TO USE
Glass is an extremely versatile but brittle building material and can break for any number of reasons, here are a few examples of the types of break patterns one can observe in glass breakage.
Regular float glass tends to break into large sharp shards and can cause lethal injury from flying debris due to an impact or blast of any type. Using solar or clear shatterproof window films can protect you from this type of glass injury which could be extremely life threatening.
Laminated glass is slightly safer but still could break and disintegrate and cause considerable damage as well, using at least a sun control window film would reduce the possibility of dangerous glass shards from basic impact damage, shatterproof safety films are always a good choice if you use these films in an open space which might be susceptible to heavy impact or blasts.
Tempered or toughened glass, though hard to break, is by no means indestructible and can cause severe damage as well, particularly in the event of a bomb blast. This type of glass breaks into small crystals and these pellets can penetrate the skin very easily at high velocity acting similar to a barrage of small arms bullets being fired at you. If you are using glass, it is always a good idea to protect yourself against impact or blast events that could shatter the glass and make it extremely dangerous.
One notable factor that has been highly misunderstood is the way solar energy works on interiors and on humans as well. The chart just above is an illustration of the 4 main components that make up solar energy distribution or how we actually receive it in a tropical climate such as ours. The combination of Ultraviolet rays, Infrared rays and Visible light rays all effect not only on our skin, but also all furniture, fabric, carpets, paintings and even some other solid objects that would decay and crumble from its prolonged deadly effect. Staying protected and away from excessive sun is the key, that’s why we have sun control window films. The biggest contributor to fading comes from Ultra Violet light which even though is just 6% of the entire solar spectrum as seen in the illustration on the top left of this section, it makes up about 40%. UV rays makes your skin age rapidly and if you are somewhat of a light skin person, you can be vulnerable to skin cancer. UV rays are also the reason why your valuable interior furnishing, carpets, flooring, and paintings fades rapidly and loses its color. Direct heat also contributes to fading and decay of materials in an interior space. 25% of the heat we feel on our skin can be attributed to direct exposure to Infrared rays and another 25% is due to direct visible light. The miscellaneous component listed above is made of ambient indirect UV, Infrared and visible light that seeps through windows that are not directly facing the sun but allow the light in anyway. When selecting a film, you should always consider looking at all three factors and make a calculated balance to keep your interior well protected.
Best to use solar shatterproof or clear safety film for regular float glass.
Using regular sun control film helps, but the better option is to use solar shatterproof or clear safety film on laminated glass.
Use of solar shatterproof or clear safety film is highly recommended owing to the glass breaking into tiny pellets.
